making a shelter

Severe weather is a very real danger and it is vital to protect yourself and your home from its impact. It is important to be prepared and aware of the changing conditions and use technology to respond quickly. A solid disaster plan is also necessary. The Accident Fund provides Severe Weather Safety Materials to individuals and companies.

Preparing for severe weather

You should be prepared for severe weather if you live near a place that is more susceptible. It is important to be prepared for severe storms. They can cause significant damage and even death. Good plans will include water, nonperishable food and water, as well as flashlights with additional batteries, prescription medications, can openers that are non-electric, and baby items.

Keep yourself informed about the latest weather forecasts if you live near severe weather. You can keep track of the weather by listening to local radio stations and checking the NOAA meteor radio. To receive emergency instructions, you should sign up for emergency notifications. Some communities have sirens outside to warn residents of imminent severe weather. Other communities rely on the media and other means to communicate with residents.

Shelter in a building

When severe weather threatens, it is important to seek shelter inside a building. This will allow for you to escape outdoor hazards and protect your personal property. It is better to find shelter in an interior space, with fewer windows. You can also lock exterior doors and windows to ensure safety. While inside a building, turn on the radio and prepare for an extended stay.

best survival tips in the woods

Take shelter inside a car if you find yourself outside a building. Avoid large open spaces and windows. A good idea is to find shelter in a nearby structure. In the event of a storm, stay inside until the storm passes.

Keep warm even in very cold weather

It's important to keep warm in extremely cold temperatures. Wearing warm, waterproof clothing is essential. You'll also want to invest in a good pair of lined leather gloves to protect your hands from cold. Try to avoid going outside and walk under buildings.

Layers are the best way to stay warm in cold conditions. The best way to keep warm in cold weather is to wear layers. Thinner layers of clothes will hold heat better than thicker ones. Layers can be added to keep your fingers and torso warm. Also, wearing thermal tights underneath your clothes is smart. However, keep in mind that tight clothing will reduce blood flow and prevent warm blood from reaching cold body parts. You can keep your head warm by wearing a hat.

Avoid electrical equipment

Avoid using electricity if you live in an area susceptible to severe storms. It's better to work on electrical equipment from higher ground than you do if you have to. If you don't know what to do, you can always contact your local emergency line for advice. Also, you should have an emergency kit prepared and listen to the local weather reports. If there is a severe storm watch or warning, it will be your responsibility to avoid the area.

A metal enclosed building is safer than any other. Electricity can pass through plumbing and conduct through metal. Exposed electrical lines should be kept at least 10 ft away. It is also a good idea to avoid convertible vehicles, as they offer no protection from lightning.

Heat rash, especially in infants and toddlers, can be dangerous. Excessive sweating is a common cause. It can also be dangerous for toddlers and infants who are constantly covered in clothing. How to Navigate Without a Compass or With One

Although a compass does not tell you where you're going, it can help you get back to your home in case you lose your bearings.

There are three ways to navigate:

  1. By landmarks
  2. Magnetic North (using a compasse)
  3. By stars

Landmarks can be objects you recognize as soon as you see them. These can be trees, buildings, rivers, and so on. Because they give you a visual clue about where you are, landmarks are very useful.

Magnetic North simply means the direction where the Earth’s magnetic field points. If you look at the sky, the sun appears like it's moving across the sky. However, the earth's magnet field causes the sun to move about the earth. Although it appears that the sun is moving across the sky and around the horizon, it actually does so. The sun is directly overhead at noon. At midnight, the sun is directly below you. The earth's magnetic field is constantly changing, so the exact direction of the magnetic North pole changes every day. This means that sometimes you may be off course for quite a while.

Another method of navigating is using stars. The stars appear to rise or set above the horizon. These points are in space and can be used to locate your position relative to other places.

What is the best survival tip?

It is essential to be calm in order to survive. You will fail, make mistakes, and eventually die if you panic.

What is your most valuable survival tool in case you get lost?

The compass is a tool that tells us where north is. It also shows us how far we have traveled from our starting point. The compass may not always help you find your way if you're travelling to a mountainous area. However, if you're in a flat area, the compass should be able to show you the way.

If you don’t have a map or compass, an object like a stone or tree could be used as a reference. While you will still need to find a landmark by which to guide you, it is at least possible to know the direction of north.
