How To

How to keep food alive in a survival situation

In a long-term emergency, drying food is the best method to preserve it. Drying foods removes moisture which makes them last longer. It also reduces the possibility of bacteria growth.

Dried fruits can be used as snacks in emergencies and don't require cooking. You can take them with you and eat as many as you wish without worrying about weight gain.

It is possible to dry fruit at-home using a drying rack, but a solar oven would be more practical. You could use a solar oven to dry all sorts of foods, including meat, fish, vegetables, and grains.

Airtightness is the most important aspect of food preservation. This prevents oxygen from entering the container and spoiling the food. It is not necessary to add preservatives if you seal the container well enough.

If you do decide to add preservatives, try adding salt first. Salt helps prevent mold growth. Then, follow that with vinegar. Vinegar kills bacteria and inhibits mold growth.

To get started, you'll need to cut up your food into small pieces. Either a pair of scissors or a sharp knife are acceptable. You can use scissors or a knife to pack your items well.

Next, place the food inside a plastic bag. Then seal the bag and place it somewhere warm to dry completely.

After the food is dried, seal it in a container. Make sure that nothing touches the food.
