American Hiking Society volunteers have been working to restore trails and advocate for hikers since the Arizona wildfires. This week-long effort led to a significantly improved area for hikers. The Arizona National Scenic Trail which spans over 125 mi has been severely damaged by the fires. This region is in dire need of volunteers, with record numbers and a small staff.

AHS Volunteer Vacations provides trail maintenance and repairs, as well as helping to improve over 5,000 miles hiking trails. A group of six to ten volunteers makes up the group. Larger groups are accepted at times that are not COVID. Anyone who would like to join an AHS-organized trail services trip can request a crew via the Society's site. They will then work alongside trail organizations and land managers to help maintain the trails in their area.

NextGen Trail Leaders has brought together rising stars in the outdoor community to improve our trails. To improve access to trails, the program has also worked in partnership with national park services agencies. NextGen Trail Leaders is an exciting program that brings together diverse individuals and the American hiking community. With its work, the American Hiking Society is able to connect people and communities to the outdoors. A new report is expected to be released soon.

FAQ

What should the shelf life of survival supplies be?

It is best to have sufficient supplies on hand in case of an emergency. You don't want to be stuck without anything when disaster strikes.

If you're camping, for example you should bring all your essentials in one small bag. This includes water, food, first aid kits and fire starters.

Include a flashlight, map/compass, whistle and any other essential items. These items will allow you to stay safe and help you find your way back home if you get lost.

You should keep these items in a waterproof container like a bag, box or bucket. It is important that these supplies are easy-to-reach and do not get lost or tossed around in your backpack when you go hiking.

Consider the things you'll be using most often, and how much space each one takes up when packing. If you have room left over, consider adding extra items. If you are planning on spending a lot time outdoors cooking, you might consider adding a stove and pots to your shopping list.

Keep track of your supplies so that you are able to find them when you return to civilization.

How many days worth of supplies should I have stored away?

In an ideal world, you would want to keep three months worth supplies on hand. That means having enough food, water, and other necessities to sustain yourself for three months.

This number can vary depending on how severe the emergency is. There may not be anyone nearby to help you if your location is remote. Maybe there's no electricity grid.

In such cases, it is a good idea to prepare for a more long-term situation.

What supplies for medical use should I keep in stock?

You need to ensure you have at least three months supply of all medicines in case you find yourself in an emergency situation. Stocking up on all kinds of medication, such as pain relievers, antibiotics, and cold medicines, is the best way to do so. Also, consider storing food because you won't be able to make fresh meals as often if you don’t have the time or resources to do so.

Where are the majority of doomsday planners?

Most people who are prepping for an apocalypse tend to live in rural areas. Because of this, they are more likely than others to survive a social collapse. They also have a greater likelihood of finding supplies if there's less competition.

You need to be able to survive.

The best places to go are those with low population density. Less people means that it's easier to survive.

My survival gear should be stored where?

It is best to keep your emergency survival gear near you so it is easily accessible in the event of an emergency. The easiest place to store your supplies is in a closet or under your bed.

Make sure you label your supplies with the contents and date, so you know which ones you've used and which are still good.

Also, be sure to keep another copy of your inventory. If you lose your apartment or house, you will need proof you had the right stuff.

What emergency supplies should you have at your home?

It is important to plan ahead and be prepared for anything if you're going on a long-term trip. Consider packing food, water and a first aid kit. This will help you feel prepared and more confident that you will be able to deal with any situation.

Start with a basic first-aid kit. Include antiseptic creams and painkillers, gauze pads. Bandages, scissors, tweezers. Thermometers. Disinfectant wipes. A small flashlight is also a good idea to help you see what's in your kit when there's no power.

It is a good idea to keep these items in a clear plastic container with a cover. This will make sure they remain dry and clean.

You should also consider storing food for up to two weeks. You can even make your own freeze-dried foods. These are simple to cook and require no special cooking equipment. All you need is hot water.

Another option is to install a solar-powered battery back up system. This will allow you recharge your smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

Which canned food is best for survival?

However, the best canned food for survival may not be the most nutritious. It will depend on what food you are looking for. You can choose beans if you need energy; meat is for protein.

If you are looking for nutrition, then try to find foods that have high levels of vitamins and minerals.
